1Start with the diameter

The kits are offered in seven diameters: 15, 18, 23, 27, 34, 42 and 50 mm. The diameter is what drives the holding force, so match it to the weight of the panel or door rather than to the space available.

For a light cabinet door or an inspection cover, the smaller diameters are usually enough. For a heavy panel, a large flap or anything that will be opened many times a day, move up a size and gain a reserve.

2Know why a kit beats loose parts

A magnetic closure is always a pair: something magnetic on one side and something for it to grip on the other. Buying that pair as a kit means the two halves are made for each other, in the same diameter, with the fixing already solved.

The exact contents are listed with each product, so check the item page before ordering if you need to know precisely what arrives in the package.

3Mount both halves so they meet flat

A magnetic closure only reaches its rated force when the two faces meet flat and in full contact. Even a fraction of a millimetre of misalignment, a screw head standing proud or a panel that closes at a slight angle will cut the holding force noticeably.

  • Fit the magnet first, close the panel and mark the counterpart through the closed door.
  • Use countersunk screws so nothing stands between the two faces.
  • Check that the door rests against the magnet, not against the frame, otherwise the magnet never touches.

4Think about how the door will be opened

A magnet resists a straight pull far better than a sideways slide. That works in your favour: a door that is opened by pulling straight out needs more force, while a door that can be levered or twisted open releases easily even with a strong magnet.

If a closure feels too strong in daily use, the answer is usually a smaller diameter rather than a spacer, because a spacer weakens the hold unpredictably.

5Check the environment before you fit

The kits use standard neodymium magnets for dry interiors and temperatures up to roughly 80 °C. For a damp room, an outdoor cover or a warm machine, ask us first; the wider range offers epoxy and rubberised coatings and higher temperature grades.

Tip: Fit one kit first and try the door before you drill the rest. The difference between the right diameter and one size up is obvious the moment you open the panel, and it is much cheaper to find out on the first door than on the twelfth.

Frequently asked questions about magnetic fastening kits

Seven sizes: 15, 18, 23, 27, 34, 42 and 50 mm. The diameter drives the holding force, so choose it from the weight and size of the panel rather than from the space you happen to have. Each product page lists the exact specification of that kit.

Because a magnetic closure is always a pair. The magnet needs something on the opposite side to grip, and that half has to be the right size and mounted in the right place. A kit solves the pairing and the fixing in one order, which is faster than assembling the parts yourself and avoids mismatched diameters.

Fit the magnet side first, close the panel and mark the position of the counterpart through the closed door. The two faces must meet flat and fully; a gap of even a fraction of a millimetre, or a screw head standing proud, noticeably reduces the hold. Also make sure the door rests against the closure and not against the frame.

Move down a diameter rather than adding a spacer. A spacer weakens the hold in a way that is hard to predict and often leaves the door rattling instead of closing firmly. Bear in mind that a door which opens with a straight pull always feels stronger than one you can lever or twist open.

They use standard neodymium magnets intended for dry interiors and temperatures up to roughly 80 °C. For a bathroom, an outdoor cover or a warm machine, contact us and we will suggest an equivalent with an epoxy or rubberised coating or a higher temperature grade from the wider range.

MAGSY European specialist in magnets and magnetic technology

A magnetic closure is never a single part, which is why we offer it as a complete kit in seven diameters from 15 to 50 mm. You order one item, both halves match, and the fixing is already solved. If you would rather build the closure yourself, the same shop stocks magnets with countersunk holes, self-adhesive magnets and separate counterparts in matching sizes. Every product lists its full specification, and we are happy to help you pick the diameter before you drill the first door.
