1Decide between a framed board and a surface you apply
A framed board with a white lacquered surface and an aluminium frame is a finished product: you hang it and it is done. An adhesive board or coated foil turns a wall, a door or a cupboard front into a writable magnetic surface, in whatever shape and size the room allows.
Take the framed board for a meeting room or a classroom. Take the applied surface where you want a whole wall, an odd shape or something a tenant can remove later.
2Pick the size from the reading distance
Six sizes are stocked, and the two that sell most are 120 x 90 cm and 90 x 60 cm, with larger formats up to 180 x 120 cm for meeting rooms and classrooms.
A rough rule: 90 x 60 cm suits a home office or a small team standing close to it, 120 x 90 cm is the standard for a meeting room, and anything read from more than four or five metres away wants the larger formats.
3Know which product is the magnet and which is the steel
This is where orders go wrong, because the range contains both halves of the pair:
- Coated and metallized foils (white or black, writable with a marker or chalk) are the steel surface. Magnets hold on them.
- Flexible magnetic boards in A4, A3 and by the metre are the magnet. They hold on steel, so they need a fridge, a cabinet or a coated foil underneath.
If you want to stick magnets onto a wall, you need the foil. If you want to stick something onto an existing steel surface, you need the flexible board.
4Check the thickness and the width before you order by the metre
Flexible magnetic boards come in 0.4 mm and 1 mm. The thinner version is lighter and cheaper, the 1 mm holds noticeably better and lies flatter, which matters on anything larger than A3.
Material sold by the metre comes in fixed widths, typically 0.6 m for flexible boards and 1.2 m for coated foil, so plan the layout around the width and buy the length you need rather than cutting large offcuts to waste.
5Budget for the accessories in the same order
A board without accessories is half a solution. Markers, erasers, cleaning spray, a magnetic marker holder and a set of board magnets are what make it usable from day one.
Use a whiteboard marker only, and clean the surface regularly. Permanent marker and dried-on ink are the two things that ruin a lacquered board, and a cleaning spray is far cheaper than a replacement.
6Prepare the wall before an adhesive surface goes on
Adhesive boards and foils need a flat, smooth, clean and dry wall. Fresh paint, textured plaster or a dusty surface will show every imperfection and let the edges lift over time.
Tip: Work out what will actually hang on the board before you choose. If it is mostly paper held by magnets, a coated foil on the wall does the job for a fraction of the price of a framed board. If it will be written on daily by several people, buy the framed board with a proper lacquered surface, because that is the part that survives years of marker and eraser.
