1Read the dimensions in the order A x B x C
In every product name the first number is the length A, the second the width B and the third the height C. A magnet described as 20x20x3 is therefore 20 mm long, 20 mm wide and 3 mm high.
Block magnets in this category are magnetised through the height C, in other words perpendicular to the large A x B face. The two large faces are the poles, and that is the face the magnet holds on. A flat block does not hold on its narrow edge.
2Do not judge the strength by the surface area alone
Most blocks in the range are thin: the height C of the majority of them stays under 5 mm. A thin block delivers a high pull force in direct contact, but loses it quickly as soon as an air gap appears.
If the magnet will sit under a veneer, a plastic cover, a coat of paint or a layer of glue, choose a taller block rather than a larger flat one. Height in the direction of magnetisation is what carries the field across a gap.
3Choose the pull force with a reserve
The stated pull force is measured in direct contact with a thick, flat and clean steel plate, pulled perpendicular to the surface. Thin sheet metal, paint, rust and side loading all reduce it.
Select a magnet with 2 to 3 times the pull force of the weight it will actually hold. For cabinet doors, covers and light catches a pull force of 2 to 5 kg is usually enough; blocks above 15 kg belong in fixtures and industrial holding, not in furniture.
4Match the grade to the working temperature
Standard N grade blocks work up to roughly 80 °C. The range also holds blocks for 81 to 120 °C, 121 to 150 °C and 151 to 200 °C, made from the H, SH, UH and EH grades. Exceeding the stated maximum working temperature causes an irreversible loss of force, so check the value in the product parameters whenever the magnet goes near a motor, a light fitting, an oven or a vehicle engine bay.
5Decide how the block will be fixed before you order
- Gluing to a flat surface: a plain block, or a self-adhesive version with the tape already applied.
- Screwing: a block with a hole, because you cannot drill into a finished magnet.
- Recessed mounting: mill a pocket to the A x B dimension plus about 0.2 mm of clearance and bond the block in with epoxy.
Adhesive tape holds well in tension but poorly in shear. If the load pulls sideways along the surface, use a screw or a bonded pocket instead.
6Handle the edges with care
Sintered NdFeB is hard but brittle, and the sharp corners of a block chip more easily than the rounded edge of a cylinder. Let two blocks meet slowly instead of snapping together, slide them apart sideways rather than pulling them straight off, and keep them away from electronics and payment cards.
Tip: Two blocks facing each other hold far more than one block on sheet steel. For a door or a cover, pair a magnet with a steel counterplate or with a second magnet of opposite polarity rather than moving up to a stronger single piece.

Frequently asked questions about neodymium block magnets
The two large A x B faces. Block magnets in this category are magnetised perpendicular to the surface, through the height C, so the poles sit on the largest faces. A 20x20x3 magnet holds on its 20x20 face, not on the 20x3 edge. If you need the field to come out of the narrow side instead, that is a different magnetisation direction and needs to be ordered as a custom part.
A is the length, B the width and C the height of the block, in that order. The filters on this page use the same letters, so you can search by any of the three separately, for example all blocks with a height C up to 5 mm or all blocks with a length A between 10 and 15 mm.
Not necessarily. Pull force depends on the height in the direction of magnetisation, the grade and the thickness of the steel the magnet sits on, not only on the contact area. A tall small block often beats a wide thin one across an air gap, and a magnet on 0.6 mm sheet metal reaches only a fraction of the value measured on a thick plate. Compare the stated pull force rather than the dimensions.
No. Sintered NdFeB is a hard, brittle material; drilling, grinding or cutting cracks the magnet, destroys the coating and the heat generated demagnetises it. If you need a screw fixing, order a block that already has the hole made before magnetisation, or use a self-adhesive version or a bonded pocket.
Degrease both surfaces, then use a two-component epoxy for a permanent bond or cyanoacrylate for small pieces; self-adhesive versions come with the tape already applied. Keep in mind that adhesive holds much better in tension than in shear, so if the load pulls sideways along the surface, add a mechanical stop or use a magnet with a hole and a screw.
