2Read the R value in the product name
Names such as 40x20x10xR95 or 50x50x30xR157 mean the magnet has a curved face ground to that radius in millimetres. A magnet with R95 is shaped to sit against a cylindrical surface of roughly 190 mm diameter, because the diameter is twice the radius.
These pieces are made for drums, rollers and rotating assemblies where a flat magnet would only touch along one line and lose most of its hold. Match the R value to the actual diameter of your drum before ordering.
3Treat the pull force in this category as genuinely dangerous
Most magnets here sit in the highest force band, above 50 kg. A magnet of that class snaps shut across several centimetres, crushes fingers instantly and cannot be pulled apart by hand once it has closed onto steel.
Plan how you will hold, transport and release the magnet before it arrives, not after. Choose a lower band if the application does not truly require this much force.
4Work out the handling before the first use
- Keep large pieces separated by thick non-magnetic spacers, for example wood or several layers of cardboard.
- Slide a magnet off a steel surface sideways instead of pulling it straight off.
- Handle the biggest pieces with two people and never between your body and a steel surface.
- Keep them at least 1 metre from pacemakers, hard drives, payment cards and measuring instruments.
5Check the working temperature
Most atypical pieces are standard N grade for use up to roughly 80 °C, with some available for 81 to 120 °C and 121 to 150 °C. Because these magnets often end up in machinery rather than on a desk, confirm the value in the product parameters before mounting them anywhere warm.
