Magnetic Handling Tools for Scrap Collection and Workshops

Magnetic tools for collecting metal and keeping workplaces clean

Magnetic handling tools make it easier to collect swarf, screws and other ferromagnetic objects. They are used in scrap yards, workshops, metalworking facilities, electroplating plants and paint shops.

  • A handling rod helps move smaller steel parts.
  • A manual collector quickly picks up swarf and nails from the floor.
  • A magnet on a long rod reaches into tanks and less accessible places.
  • Magnets capture iron and steel, not every type of metal.

What can magnetic tools pick up?

Magnetic rods and collectors work primarily with ferromagnetic materials:

  • iron and steel swarf,
  • screws, nuts and washers,
  • nails and pieces of wire,
  • steel cut-outs and smaller components,
  • particles produced during machining.

They do not pick up aluminium, copper, brass or most non-magnetic stainless steels. They therefore cannot be used as universal detectors for all metals.

Which tool should you choose?

Magnetic handling rod

This is used to grip and move smaller ferromagnetic parts, such as sheet-metal cut-outs. The handle removes the need to reach directly among sharp or less accessible components.

Manual magnetic swarf collector

This is suitable for cleaning floors and work surfaces. It picks up larger quantities of swarf, nails or wire, and pulling the top handle easily releases the collected material into a container.

Magnet on a long rod

This helps retrieve steel parts from tanks or deeper spaces beyond arm’s reach. An articulated joint allows the angle of the magnetic face to be adjusted.

Quick comparison

  • Individual parts: a handling rod.
  • Swarf and nails on the floor: a manual collector.
  • A tank or deeper space: a magnet on a long rod.

How do you use these tools safely?

  1. Before use, inspect the magnet, handle, connection and joint.
  2. Test the attraction on the particular object.
  3. Move the object low over a stable surface.
  4. Do not put your fingers between the magnet and the steel part.
  5. Release collected swarf only over a collection container.
  6. After work, clean the magnet and store it in a dry place.

These are not load-lifting devices

Do not use handling rods or collectors to lift heavy objects above people. Actual holding force depends on the thickness, shape, cleanliness and surface of the steel part.

Frequently asked questions

Do these tools pick up every metal?

No. They work mainly with iron, ordinary steel and other ferromagnetic materials.

How is a swarf collector cleaned?

Hold it over a container and pull the top handle. The collected debris drops off.

Can a handling rod lift heavy steel sheets?

It is not a lifting magnet. It is intended mainly for smaller parts and handling assistance.

Can a magnet on a rod be immersed in any liquid?

No. Its material compatibility with the particular chemical environment, temperature and liquid must be checked beforehand.

Why is the actual force sometimes lower?

Rust, paint, grease, curvature, thin sheet metal or contact with only part of the magnetic face reduce it.

Summary

Magnetic handling tools make working with steel parts easier and help keep workplaces free of swarf, nails and other ferromagnetic debris.

A handling rod is suitable for individual parts, a manual collector for quick clean-up, and a long articulated rod for retrieving objects from tanks or hard-to-reach places.

Make working with metal parts easier

Choose a handling rod, magnetic collector or industrial tool according to your operation and the size of the objects to be picked up.
