In our e-shop, you can choose from two types of flexible magnetic strips: self-adhesive magnetic strips or colored magnetic strips. Magnetic strips are made from a mixture of rubber or plastic and ferrite or neodymium powder. This creates a flexible magnet that can be cut or trimmed to any length and shape. 1Understand what a flexible magnet is
Magnetic tape is ferrite or neodymium powder bound in rubber or plastic. The result is a magnet you can cut to any length and shape with scissors, which no solid magnet allows.
The trade-off is force. A flexible magnet holds a sheet of paper or a light sign, not a tool. For anything heavier, use a solid magnet or a pot magnet instead.
2Pick the type from which side has to stick
The two families do opposite jobs. Self-adhesive tape has an adhesive layer on one side and a magnetic layer on the other, so it makes an object magnetic: stick it to a sign, a card, a picture frame or a cabinet edge and the item then holds on steel.
Coloured tape is magnetic through and through, with no adhesive. It goes straight onto a steel surface as a visible marker, and it is the one to pick for boards, planning walls and shelf marking.
3Choose the width from the job
Widths in stock run 10, 15, 19, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 mm. The narrow ones suit shelf edges, card backs and fine detail; 30 to 50 mm is what you want for planning boards and anything that has to be read from a distance.
Coloured tapes are supplied by the metre, so you can order exactly the length of the run rather than a fixed roll.
4Use colour as a code
Coloured tapes are stocked in white, black and colours close to RAL 5019 blue, RAL 6032 green, RAL 3020 red and RAL 1018 yellow. On a planning board that means one colour per shift, per machine or per order status, readable across the room.
They also take a whiteboard marker, so a strip cut to size becomes a reusable label: write it, move it, wipe it and write it again.
5Mind the thickness
Thickness decides both the hold and where the tape will fit. The thin 0.3 and 0.6 mm versions disappear behind a card or a label, while a 2 mm tape with a strong adhesive layer holds noticeably more where you have the space for it.
Prepare the surface for any self-adhesive version: degrease with alcohol, let it dry, press firmly and give the adhesive time before you load it. Adhesive resists a straight pull far better than a sideways drag.
6Know when to switch to foil
Tape is the answer for strips and edges. Once you need an area rather than a line, a whole A4 sign, a vehicle door panel or a printable surface, move to the magnetic foil range, which is the same flexible material supplied in sheets.
Tip: A coloured tape on the front of a steel shelf is the cheapest labelling system there is, but it wipes off if it gets knocked. Where a label must survive forklift traffic, use a magnetic label with a C-profile and a protective foil instead.
