What is magnetic paper?

If you are looking for a new way to make classroom presentations more engaging, want to promote an event creatively or need an emergency phone list that will not fall off the fridge, magnetic paper can be a useful solution.

Magnetic paper is a combination of magnetised rubber and paper. It is usually supplied in A4, A3 or A5 sheets for easy printing and is available in various thicknesses, typically around 0.3 to 0.5 mm.

Depending on the specific material, it can be suitable for both inkjet and laser printing. It is often used for short-term advertising and marketing activities, magnetic fridge photos, educational aids, business cards and other creative applications.

The paper becomes magnetic because the flexible rubber or plastic backing contains magnetised strontium ferrite powder or another magnetic material. The result is essentially a flexible magnetic sheet.

The thickness of magnetic paper affects both its magnetic strength and its printability. Thicker versions provide stronger adhesion but may be less suitable for certain types of printers.

Ideas for using magnetic paper

Magnetic paper can be used in many different ways:

Disadvantages of magnetic paper

Although magnetic paper is a very useful product, it also has several limitations.

1. Because of the materials used in magnetic paper, it may be less suitable for certain laser printers.
2. Some older inkjet printers may generate more heat and may not be ideal for printing on this material.
3. If the printer does not feed the sheet through flat, the printed image may become distorted.
4. Exposure to UV radiation may damage the material over time and reduce its performance.
5. It is advisable to feed sheets into the printer one at a time to prevent them from sticking together.

Alternative: magnetic foil

In addition to magnetic paper, magnetic foils are also available. They are most commonly sold by the metre, but also in standard A3, A4 and A5 formats. Their thickness typically starts at around 0.5 mm and they are available in a range of colours.

Magnetic foil is ideal, for example, for removable advertising on vehicles. For this application, it is advisable to choose a thicker foil, usually at least 0.7 mm, so that it adheres more securely. However, greater thickness may reduce print quality.

Uncoated magnetic foil with a thickness of 0.4 to 2 mm is suitable for both office and home use. It is versatile, easy to work with and particularly useful for promotional materials.
