Why are magnets shaped like horseshoes? Why is the horseshoe considered a symbol of a magnet? Why were magnets made in this shape? And why are neodymium magnets not usually manufactured in a horseshoe shape?

These are questions that do have answers, although the explanations are often incomplete. In this article, we will therefore explain the subject in a simpler and clearer way.

The horseshoe magnet is historically one of the best-known magnet shapes. In the past, this design was used mainly to improve the effectiveness of the magnetic field and make it more stable.

Why is it shaped like a horseshoe?

One important reason for the U-shape is to reduce the risk of demagnetisation in older magnetic materials.

The horseshoe shape helps the magnet retain its magnetisation more effectively. In technical terms, this relates to coercivity. For magnetic materials with lower coercivity, such as iron or AlNiCo, this shape can be advantageous. It also helps concentrate the magnetic field in the gap between the two poles.

For example, magnets used in door and window alarm sensors are often long cylindrical AlNiCo magnets.

Neodymium magnets are not only stronger than many other types of magnets, but they also have much higher coercivity. As a result, they generally do not lose their magnetisation as easily over time.

Do neodymium magnets need to be horseshoe-shaped?

No. Neodymium magnets are extremely strong and have high coercivity. This means they do not need a horseshoe shape in order to improve their magnetic properties.

It is also worth noting that although neodymium magnets are strong, they are relatively brittle. A U-shape could increase mechanical stress in the curved section of the magnet, making it more susceptible to damage.

When is a horseshoe magnet useful?

  • for historical or educational demonstrations,
  • where the magnetic poles need to be positioned close together.
