1Measure the temperature at the magnet

What decides the choice is the temperature at the magnet under continuous operation, not the temperature of the room. Inside a machine housing, next to a motor, in an engine bay or above a heat source, it is routinely far higher than people expect.

If you cannot measure it, estimate on the high side. Choosing one class too low causes a permanent loss; choosing one class too high costs only a little more.

2Match the material to the figure

Where the bands overlap, the decision is commercial rather than technical: ferrite if a larger magnet is acceptable, samarium if the force has to stay high in a small body.

3Read the grade letters on neodymium

With neodymium, the letter after the grade number is the temperature class: N up to about 80 °C, M to 100 °C, H to 120 °C, SH to 150 °C, UH to 180 °C and EH to 200 °C. A product named VMM7UH therefore works to roughly 180 °C, and the exact maximum working temperature is listed in the parameters of every item.

4Understand what overheating actually does

Below the stated maximum, a magnet gives up a little force while it is hot and recovers it on cooling. Above the maximum, the loss is permanent and the magnet never returns to its original strength, even back at room temperature.

This is why a machine that has been running for a few weeks sometimes seems to have quietly weakened: the magnet was one class too low and lost force on the very first hot cycle.

5Do not overheat the magnet while fitting it

Welding, grinding, soldering and drilling near a mounted magnet can push it past its limit within seconds, and the damage is the same as if the machine had overheated in service. Carry out all hot work first and fit the magnet afterwards.

Match the adhesive to the magnet as well. Bonding a 200 °C magnet with an epoxy that softens at 120 °C is a common failure, and it looks like a magnet problem when the part comes loose.

6Check the environment as well as the heat

Heat and damp together attack the plating on a neodymium magnet, and once the coating is compromised corrosion follows. Ferrite and samarium are naturally corrosion resistant and are supplied bare, with nothing on the surface that can fail.

Tip: Tell us the working temperature, the required holding force and the space available, and we will name the material. We stock all three, so the recommendation is not driven by what we happen to have on the shelf, and a cheap ferrite magnet is often the right answer to a hot problem.

Frequently asked questions about heat-resistant magnets

Samarium and ferrite both reach the 201 to 350 °C band. Samarium keeps a high force there, which is why it is used in motors, sensors and instruments; ferrite holds far less but costs a fraction as much, so it wins wherever a larger magnet is acceptable. Neodymium stops at about 200 °C even in its highest grades.

They are the temperature classes of neodymium. N works up to roughly 80 °C, M to 100 °C, H to 120 °C, SH to 150 °C, UH to 180 °C and EH to 200 °C. Generally yes. Within neodymium, the higher temperature classes give a somewhat lower pull force for the same size, because the material is formulated for thermal stability rather than maximum energy. Between materials the difference is much larger: a ferrite magnet needs to be considerably bigger than a neodymium one for the same hold.

Do all hot work before the magnet goes in, and choose an adhesive rated for the same temperature as the magnet, since a softening epoxy is a common cause of failures blamed on the magnet.
