Which magnets are best for magnetic paint?
You may be wondering which magnets are most suitable for magnetic paint. We recommend the strongest option: neodymium magnets.
Neodymium magnets are among the strongest commercially manufactured permanent magnets available in the world.
They are made from an alloy of neodymium, boron and iron. This gives them high magnetic energy while also making them more resistant to demagnetisation than ferrite, AlNiCo or samarium-cobalt magnets.
Because iron oxidises quickly, neodymium magnets are given a protective surface coating to help prevent corrosion.
The magnetic attraction between two neodymium magnets is so strong that if they are placed close enough together, they can snap together violently and break.

Magnetic paint is a special paint containing fine iron particles. Once applied to a wall, it creates a dark base to which magnets can attach.
The paint must be mixed thoroughly before use because the iron particles tend to settle at the bottom of the container.
How does magnetic paint work?
Magnets are attracted to the iron particles contained in the paint. The more layers of magnetic paint you apply, the stronger the attraction becomes. We recommend applying at least 3 coats.
You can also apply a standard topcoat over the magnetic paint, but take care not to reduce the magnetic strength too much.
What should you watch out for?
Do not expect a perfectly smooth surface. Magnetic paint is slightly rougher once dry because it contains iron particles.
Mix thoroughly first. Before use, mix both the paint and primer thoroughly so that the iron particles are distributed evenly.
More coats mean better results. Apply at least three coats to make the magnetic wall as effective as possible.
Use the right magnets. Strong neodymium magnets are the most suitable choice for magnetic paint.
Choose a suitable topcoat colour. The primer is dark grey, so we recommend choosing a finishing shade that works well with it.
